Benny Goodman (19091986), a master of the clarinet and the King of Swing. He was a leading figure in swing jazz and a legendary bandleader, but he also had a deep love for classical music; for example, there are recordings of works such as Mozarts Clarinet Concerto, and He was also a close friend of his contemporary Bartk, and when Contrastsincluded on this albumwas dedicated to him, he recorded the piece alongside violinist Szigeti; this historic performance is available on NAXOS (8.111343). Many composers were inspired by Goodman; for example, Bernstein dedicated his own Prelude and Fugue to him, and Morton Gould, known for his film scores, was also a friend of Goodmans and wrote two works for him. Although Poulencs sonata was not strictly dedicated to Goodman (it is said to have been dedicated at Honeggers grave), Goodman performed the pre
