Born in Kyoto, Matsumura showed an interest in music from an early age, growing up with parents who played the shakuhachi and koto. After graduating from the science department of the former Third High School in 1949, he moved to Tokyo to seek guidance from Hji Kiyose, aiming to become a composer. Although he became friends with Toru Takemitsu, who was a frequent visitor to Kiyoses home at the time, he failed the entrance exam for the Tokyo University of the Arts due to tuberculosis and was forced to spend five years recuperating. Around that time, he also began writing haiku, demonstrating his talent in this field as well. After being discharged from the hospital, he released one work after another and eventually began teaching in the Composition Department of the Tokyo University of the Arts Faculty of Music in 1970.This album features three of his works.
