“Mordechai,” the third album by the Texas-based trio Kurumbin. Houston-based Laura Lee Ochoa (b), Mark Speer (g), and Donald DJ Johnson (ds) release this album on Dead Oceans, following their critically acclaimed 2018 album *Con Todo El Mundo* (they also released the EP *Texas Sun* with Leon Bridges that same year). Known for weaving disparate musical languagessuch as East Asian surf rock, Persian funk, and Jamaican dubinto delicate harmonies, the trio has taken a bold step forward on this album by featuring vocals on nearly every track. After a three-and-a-half-year tour, the band returned to their studio on a Texas farm, where the project began with Ochoa jotting down ideas inspired by a hike in his notebook.
