Ferdinand Hiller was born in Germany in 1811, one year younger than Robert Schumann, who was born in 1810, and left over 200 works, including four symphonies. He studied under Hummel and was renowned as an extremely talented pianist. He was a leading figure in the German music world at the time, and was active not only as a performer and composer, but also in many other areas, including serving as director of the Cologne Conservatory. Like Schumann’s Piano Quintet, which is also included in this recording, Hiller’s music is a magnificent work in the style of the Romantic school. Tobias Koch places special emphasis on the works of Schumann and the Romantic school.
