Born in Aachen, Leo Brech made an early name for himself as a child prodigy pianist. He later studied piano and composition in Berlin and was eventually appointed General Music Director of the Berlin Court Opera (later the National Opera). When the Nazis came to power, Brech, who was of Jewish descent, was forced out of the German music scene, but after the war he returned to Berlin and served as General Music Director of the Berlin Deutsche Oper. He had already begun making recordings as early as the mid-1910s, and his name is particularly familiar to record collectors.This opera, *The King of the Alps and the Misanthrope*, was his fifth opera, composed around 1902. When it premiered at the Dresden Court Opera, it was a sensational success. However, since the Nazis banned the performance of all his works, this opera too fell into obscurity.
