The Series on the Orchestral Works of the Forgotten Genius, Hans Rott, Begins!Hans Rott was born near Vienna and studied at the Vienna Conservatory. While studying at the Academywhere he sat side by side with Mahlerhe also studied organ with Bruckner and set his sights on a career as a musician. However, in 1878, when he submitted the first movement of his Symphony No. 1 to the Academys composition competition, it was savagely criticized by the judges. His teacher, Bruckner, was the only one to defend him, but in the end, he was rejected. After graduating, he attempted a comeback by showing his works to Brahms, but he was harshly criticized there as well. Ultimately, Rott succumbed to mental illness and passed away at the young age of 25. His Symphony No. 1, which finally gained attention in the latter half of the 20th century, had long been dismissed as a Mahler epigone (a mere imitator)
