Description:

Mikel Urquiza is a young composer from the Basque Country in Spain. After studying with Grard Pesson at the Paris Conservatory, he won the Siemens Music Foundation Composition Prize in 2022. He is currently based in Paris and is actively composing works for European ensembles. It is not easy to describe his compositional style in a single phrase. Contrary to what one might expect given his base in Paris, there is virtually no influence from the Spectral School. His unique musical vision is evident in the distinctive humor, noise, and mischievously ironic sonic gestures evoked by unusual instrumental techniques, giving his works the character of theater pieces experienced solely through sound, without visual elements.
