As in much of the world, male domination is a major problem in most West African countries. Violence, sexual abuse, grievances over residency and education, and the still existing tradition of violent mutilation of female genitalia. In order to confront these issues, the women of Les Xamazons d’Afrique have come together to use music as a weapon to speak out against these issues that are disempowering women. We believe that music can contribute to a change in attitude,” said the band’s publicist. Les Zamazon Dafric is involved in funding the Panzi Foundation, which has treated the wounds of more than 85,000 DRC women who have been sexually assaulted.
