The grand opera *Aida*, set in Egypt, premiered in Cairo in 1871 and went on to become a worldwide sensation; even today, it continues to be cherished as one of Verdis (18131901) greatest masterpieces. This 1985 live recording from La Scala features a production that was a huge hit at the time; it was broadcast on NHK in Japan and set peoples hearts ablaze. The cast is impeccable: Pavarottis Radames, captivating with his radiant voice and unpretentious acting; Chiaras Aida, with her powerful voice; and Dimitrovas Amneris, who adds a sharp, distinctive touch.
