From 1916 to 1937, Lotte Lehmann (18881976) was one of the brilliant stars of the Vienna State Opera. She was considered the finest singer of her time in the role of the Marschallin in R. Strausss *Der Rosenkavalier*. Lehmann was also renowned for her art songs, which she performed with subtle nuance and a free-spirited interpretation. In particular, her art song recitals at the Salzburg Festival in the 1930s, with Bruno Walter as her accompanist, have become the stuff of legend. This CD is the first of two volumes in the Naxos edition of Lehmanns complete lieder recordings from the late 1930s. It includes several songs from Schuberts *Winterreise* (Lehmann was the first singer to record the entire *Winterreise*). It also includes works by Brahms and Wolf. Among the singers who championed the popularization of Wolfs lieder, Lehmann was one of the greatest.
