Lully’s last opera, “Assis et Galathe”. This is Lully’s first pastoral (non-tragedy) work in 13 years and a masterpiece that has been performed many times despite controversy since its premiere. The performers are led by Christophe Rousset, a key figure of the French Baroque, and the singers are all at the forefront of their respective fields. Lully’s music for this dramatic story of the love between Galatea, a sea nymph, and Assis, a shepherd, and the violence of a jealous, polyphemous man, is a series of beautiful and moving moments, no matter which moment is chosen.
