The “All-night Prayer,” one of the official prayers of the Russian Orthodox Church, is a form of prayer that combines the Great Evening Prayer, the Early Evening Prayer, and the Hourly Prayer. It is also a rite to prepare for the Eucharistic rite, to which various composers have added music. Among them, this piece by Rachmaninoff is the most frequently performed, and is so powerful that Rachmaninoff himself begged to have the fifth piece used for his own funeral service.
