Three Masterpieces from Schuberts Piano WorksSchubert composed 32 original pieces for four-hand piano, all of which are beautiful and filled with the intimacy of a lieder. This collection features three of the finest among them. The piece in E-flat minor is widely regarded as a masterpiece. Composed in 1828, it was dedicated to Miss Caroline Esterhzy, with whom Schubert had fallen in love several years earlier. It was premiered at the Schubertiade in May 1828. The piece in C major, D812, written during a period when Schubert was composing outstanding works, is thought by some to be a sketch for a lost symphony. The Storms of Life (a title given by the publisher Diabelli) opens with an opening chord that pushes the pianos range to its absolute limit; the Allegro section is storm-like, while the following section is chorale-like, creating a world entirely distinct from the storm.
