Music was once akin to an apprenticeship system in which knowledge and technique were passed down from master to apprentice; the title of this album, Master and Apprentice, originates from the 16th and 17th centuries, a time when composers traveled throughout Europe, instructing other musicians and composers while honing their own skills.This album focuses on the great early Baroque composer Claudio Monteverdi, exploring both the vast legacy he inherited from his mentors and predecessorssuch as Josquin des Prez, Mouton, and de Laureand the influence he exerted on his own disciples, including Rigatti and Rossi.The ensemble performing Sestina Music was founded in Belfast in 2011 by Mark Chambers.
