Description:

This is Pellas and Mlisande, the only symphonic poem composed by Schoenberg (18741951). It is based on Maeterlincks play of the same name, which had also been set to music at the time by Debussy, Faur, and Sibelius, among others. Schnbergs works from before he adopted atonality all possess a late-Romantic flavor, and this piece is no exception, offering a rich, beautiful, and mellow sound to savor. The other piece, the Violin Concerto, was written more than 30 years later and is composed strictly according to the twelve-tone technique. It is striking music in which romantic touches occasionally peek through the otherwise complex style. Please enjoy this exquisitely crafted music under the precise baton of Markus Stenz, who completed the Mahler symphony cycle.
