This opera, *Mephistopheles*, is the masterpiece of Boit (18421918), who is also known as a librettist. However, the premiere of this workbased on Goethes *Faust* and with a libretto written by Boit himselfwas a complete failure. It is a controversial work that finally gained popularity only after undergoing several revisions. This production, directed by the acclaimed Robert Carsen, is certainly filled with magnificent momentssuch as his skillful handling of the notoriously difficult Act IV as a play-within-a-playand is known for having dramatically elevated Carsens reputation following its success. Furthermore, a talented bass singer is indispensable for a production of this work, and I cant help but marvel at the majestic singing of Raymie, who calls himself the Devil and has made this his signature role.
