The spirituals selected here include important world premiere recordings of works by J.S. Bach arranged by Britten and Brahms. Bach’s influence is evident in Beethoven’s “Six Songs by Gerard” and Brahms’ “Four Solemn Songs,” while Schubert’s works depict themes of prayer, death, hope, and the beauty of nature with delicate and profound emotional expression.
