This album commemorates the 300th anniversary of the birth of Johann Heinrich Rolle (17161785), a Baroque-era composer well known in Germany, and features a recording of the world premiere of his St. Matthew Passion. It follows essentially the same structure as Bachs workwith the evangelists singing from Luthers translation of the Gospel of Matthew, while soloists perform arias with newly composed lyricsbut the biblical passages quoted differ, and and it is interesting to note that Lohr begins the narrative with The Denial of Peter. A lively performance by the Cologne Academy, conducted by Michael Alexander Wilenz. (C)RS
