Michael Gielen’s last performance in Japan! His performances up to the early 1990s were cool and serious, devoid of emotion and sentiment, while in his later years, his style was more inclined toward romantic longing. The tour with the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1992 was his last visit to Japan. The style of playing is still dry. The dryness of the Webern and Mahler is extraordinary. The “Prague” Symphony is a surprisingly well-dressed performance, but the tightness of the restraints is remarkable.
