Georg Schumann was a composer from the German state of Saxony. After studying piano and composition at the Leipzig Conservatory and gaining experience as a conductor, he was invited to the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1907, where he took up a position as a professor of composition, succeeding Bruch. From 1934 to 1945, while serving as director of the academy, he appeared repeatedly with the Berlin Philharmonic as both a soloist and conductor, playing a leading role in Berlins musical scene. It is said that the Berlin Philharmonic performed at his funeral. Although Georg Schumann is known today primarily for his achievements as an educator, in his youth he demonstrated his talent as a pianist and gained enough fame to tour Europe as a virtuoso, masterfully performing one technically demanding piece after another.
