Mikhail Vaiman (19261977) was born in Novyi Buh, Mykolaiv Oblast, in what was then Soviet Ukraine. His father was the conductor of the towns wind orchestra. In 1933, the family moved to Odessa, where the young Mikhail began studying the violin. He made steady progress, but with the outbreak of World War II, his music academy was evacuated to Tashkent, Uzbekistan. After the war, he auditioned for the renowned teacher Abram Yampolsky in Moscow and was accepted; the conservatory then relocated to Leningrad. In 1949, he placed fourth at the Jan Kubeek International Competition in Prague. In 1950, he placed second in the violin division of the First Johann Sebastian Bach International Competition. In 1951, he placed second in the violin division of the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition (first place went to Leonid Kogan).
