The Newport Jazz Festival was started in Newport, Rhode Island in 1954 by the famous entertainer George Wayne. Sister festivals have been held in New York City and several other cities, and to this day it remains one of the most important jazz festivals in the world. Miles made his first appearance at the festival in 1955, and his performance of “Round Midnight” was so spectacular that it led to his signing with Columbia.
