Monteverdi’s greatest masterpiece, a collection of gems from the Ethical and Religious Forest by conductor Pablo Heras-Casado. The ensemble is the Balthasar-Neumann Choir & Ensemble, founded by Thomas Hengelbrock and named for the Baroque architect Balthasar Neumann (1687-1753). This is the first volume of a project that will include selected pieces from Monteverdi’s “Ethical and Religious Forest”! Between 1582 and 1619, Monteverdi published not less than ten scores (madrigales, canzonettas, “Musical Humor”, and even “Evening Prayer of the Virgin Mary”). After 1619, however, he composed a vast number of works for St. Mark’s Basilica and the Italian court, but no scores were published until 1638, when the eighth volume of his Madrigale collection was published (it is believed that a vast number of works were lost).
