Sir Neville Marriner, who sadly passed away in 2016, is now available in a second boxed set that collects a series of recordings he made for the Capriccio label. The recordings collected here are with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, which he founded himself in 1958. In their early years, their repertoire consisted mainly of Baroque and Classical music, but they gradually expanded their repertoire to include Romantic music in the 1990s, when the recordings collected here were made. Purcell and Beuys are sung in their own style and with great respect for their native composers, and Mendelssohn is also well suited to Marriner’s repertoire, who is known for his smooth orchestral expression.
