Flirting with the pop and dance charts since the mid-2010s, Madison Beer burst into Top Ten of album charts around the world with her third long-player, locket. Notwithstanding its demure title, the albums confessional, still-bitten, twice-shy sentiments assert themselves in steely dance songs and slippery 90s R&B textures. In examples of the former, its release was led by the pulsing dancefloor entries “make you mine” and “yes baby,” a song set in the bedroom despite its 134 bpm. The bulk of the record, however, consists of sultry, lingering memories, a heavy heart, and the intention to move on even if it means not being over it (“healthy habit” and the pop-rock-club fusion “bittersweet”).
