The winner of the 2018 Honens International Piano Competition (Canada), Nicholas Namolaze, who was born in Georgia and raised in Hungary, studied under Eliso Virsaladze and Emanuel Ax, and is highly acclaimed worldwide, having been named Pianist of the Year by the British Critics Circle. His debut album on the Ondine label is a collection of Beethovens avant-garde piano works. It begins with Piano Sonata No. 22, followed by the Hammerklavier, and concludes with the Great Fugue, which Namolazewho is also active as a composerarranged himself for solo piano. Inspired by Beethovens own version for four hands, this arrangement expressively conveys the complex counterpoint and powerful energy on a single piano.
