This is a collection of piano works by the Russian composer Galinin, who was born near Moscow in 1922 and died in Moscow in 1966. Although he is often compared to Shostakovich, listening to this album, one strongly senses the concise and humorous style of neoclassical composers such as Prokofiev. Did he express through music a sense of unfulfillment he himself felt, having been plagued by health problems throughout his life? The occasional humorous touches provide a pleasant listening experience. At the Zoo, consisting of just five very short pieces, is outstanding. [Comment provided by Naxos Japan]
