This is the latest recording by the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra, conducted by Odette & Stubbs, who have been releasing a series of outstanding Baroque opera recordings, including *Thse* and *Psyche*. Antoine Charpentier was a leading composer of the early Versailles school, known for his numerous sacred works. In France from the late 16th century through the late 17th century, ballet was the dominant art form, while opera was considered a crude art and was unpopular. It was not until Lully, in collaboration with the playwright Molire, fused the two genres in the comdie-ballet and subsequently perfected the musical tragedy that opera can be said to have finally taken root in France. After Lullys death, the style became lighter, and Charpentier, too, depicted his own unique world of love. What you can hear here are excerpts from such works.Naxos Japan
