Nikolai Medtner (18801951), a composer and pianist born in Russia who gained recognition in the United Kingdom. His body of work spans a wide range of genres, including 14 piano sonatas, three piano concertos, chamber music, and vocal worksall of which are rich in emotion and narrative depth. This album features works from three distinct periods. The tranquil and beautiful musical ideas found in the Trilogy sonatascomposed in memory of his wifes brother Andreithe short yet exceptionally eloquent Fairy Tale sonata, and his final sonata, Pastoral, encapsulate the landscapes of his homeland, Russia.
