This is a new recording by Paul Fa Nevel and the Welgas Ensemble. During the Renaissance, it was common for many composers to write pieces based on a single theme, and in many cases, even the basic melody remained the same. Composers would therefore modify the other voice parts to express their own unique style. The piece featured on this album, Misfortune Has Befallen Me, is said to be based on a chanson from around 1450. This project brings together works related to the Misfortune Has Befallen Me theme, composed by renowned Renaissance composers, with the aim of discovering the unique musical voices of each composer. Paul van Nevel, who studied at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, is an authority on Renaissance polyphony, including research and scholarship.
