Pavement was formed in Stockton, CA in 1989 with Steve Malkmus at the helm. 1992’s debut album features Malkmus, Scott Kamberg (g,vo), Mark Ivold (b), and Bob Nastanovich (ds), The band is rounded out by Malkmus and Kanberg, aka Spiral Stairs, but without the band.When introduced on the radio by Yoichi Shibuya, the band was described as “sounding like rain falling in naname”, an unmistakable sound that is right on target. Of course, it is easy to point out influences from the Velvets and the Pixies, but their personality is in full bloom at this point, exuding an early 90s attitude. Many real-timeers may prefer this to “Crewkid~,” which Malkmus describes as a parody of grunge.
