Paul Juon, a Swiss-Russian composer. Although his parents were Swiss, he was born in Moscow due to his fathers work. He studied composition at the Moscow Conservatory under Anton Arensky and Sergei Taneyev, He later studied abroad at the Berlin Higher School of Music, where he studied under Waldemar Bargil, Clara Schumanns half-brother. All of his works follow the German Romantic tradition, and the two string quartets included on this album also feature a romantic style reminiscent of Brahms, as exemplified by the cello melody heard at the beginning of the First Quartet. This recording is performed by the Berlin Philharmonic Piano Quartet, founded in 1985.Naxos Japan
