A modern fairytale, and a delightful one at that: Pretty Yende. This is the debut album of the major new soprano newly signed to an exclusive contract with Sony Classical. Born in 1985 in a small town in a remote corner of South Africa, Yende first heard opera at the age of sixteen the Flower Duet from Delibes’s Lakm, used in a British Airways television commercial. She decided on the spot that she would become an opera singer, and won a scholarship that took her to Cape Town, where she enrolled at the South African College of Music. In 2009 she took first prize in every category at the International Belvedere Competition for opera and operetta, the first time in the competition’s history that this had been achieved. That same year she joined the young artists’ programme at La Scala, Milan, making her debut there the following year. In 2011 she again swept every category, this time at Plcido D
