Rautavaara, one of Finland’s foremost contemporary composers, sadly passed away in 2016. Although his late symphonies with their mystical atmosphere and his “Cantus Artix” with birdcalls are much loved by many, the “works for cello” included in this album were not performed very often and have been quietly sleeping. Among them, the “Sonata for solo cello” composed in 1969 and the “Two Preludes and Fugues” from 1955 form the basis of Rautavaara’s chamber music composition technique, and have a fresh taste in a neoclassical style. The “Sonata No. 1,” which followed, was written in a modern style, but it was not completed immediately. The “Song of My Heart” is based on an aria from his own opera “Alexis Kivy.Various other works are sung intimately by Tanya Tetzlaff and Gunilla Schussman. Naxos Japan
