Description:

The Mass of St. Nicholas, an early masterpiece composed for the name day of Prince Nikolaus Esterhzy, dates from 1772. That same year saw the composition of the famous Farewell Symphony. Haydn (17321809) had expressed his dissatisfaction in that work because Prince Nikolauss summer vacation had been extended longer than usual. Count Nikolaus heeded Haydns wishes and released the musicians from their duties. It is said that this Mass was composed in part as a token of gratitude for that gesture. The other piece is a dramatic work that Haydn himself called the Mass of Deep Sorrow. Upon hearing the news that Nelsons fleet had defeated Napoleons fleet, Haydn was so moved that he had Benedict add a trumpet fanfare; this is why it is called the Nelson Mass.
