While there are versions of Liszts 13 symphonic poems arranged for two pianos by the composer himself, this one was arranged for solo piano by his student, Stradal. Stradal was a Czech pianist who studied not only under Liszt but also under Bruckner. His name appears frequently in accounts of Liszts life, and Liszt even dedicated his late-period nocturne In a Dream to him. He was also a skilled pianist and appears to have arranged numerous works by Bach, Handel, Buxtehude, and Liszt; however, most of those scores have been lost, making it difficult to grasp the full picture of his work. His arrangementseven when based on orchestral workswere founded on the concept of playing every single note of the original composition on the piano.
