During World War II, Liza worked at the Auschwitz concentration camp. After the war ended, she became the wife of a diplomat and boarded a ship bound for Brazil. There, she met a woman named Marta, whose appearance was the spitting image of a woman who had been sent to the gas chambers at the concentration camp. As Liza recalled her nightmarish life during that time, she gradually began to lose her mental stability and became tormented by the ghosts of her past.The experiences of Posmuii, the author of this story who barely survived the concentration camp, overlapped with those of Weinberg, who had lost his entire family to persecution; the subject matter must have been deeply personal to him as well.
