Hans Winterberg, born in Prague, was a composer influenced by Schoenberg who fused complex rhythms, impressionism, and Central European folk songs. Because he was of Jewish descent, he was subjected to forced labor and life in concentration camps under the Nazis before emigrating to Germany; Although he achieved success in the 1950s, his work was long forgottenpartly because the rise of the avant-garde made it difficult for him to receive due recognition during his lifetime, and partly because his scores were withheld from the public after his death in 1991. His Symphony No. 2 was begun in 1943, during a harsh period of oppression.
