Born in Poland, Weinberg defected to the Soviet Union. Although he became friends with Shostakovich, after the war he was caught up in Stalins anti-Jewish campaign, leading to his arrest and a ban on the performance of his worksa period marked by great hardship. In his later years, he devoted himself to composing symphonic works imbued with anti-war sentiments, while also revising his early works and reflecting on his turbulent youth.The Chamber Symphony No. 2 included on this album is one such late work; it is based on the String Quartet No. 3, which was written in 1944 but never performed in public. However, the work has been significantly alteredthe second movement of the original was moved to the third movement, and a new second movement featuring distinctive musical ideas and prominent timpani was addedto the extent that it can be viewed as an entirely different work.
