Lyadov is known for his grand orchestral works based on Russian folk talessuch as the symphonic poems The Enchanted Lake and Kikimoraas well as his romantic piano pieces that carry on the tradition of Chopin. He also left behind numerous choral works. While many of these works fall into three categoriesreligious works, folk song arrangements, and original compositionsthey all possess a beauty underpinned by exquisite craftsmanship. Many of the pieces included on this album are based on Russian folk songs, yet these simple melodies have been transformed into magnificent a cappella choral works that make full use of the lower registers.
