Elgars Symphony No. 2 and the Exquisitely Beautiful Sigh & Elegy by Oramo and the Stockholm PhilharmonicSACD hybrid disc. This new recording features Elgar, performed by the Stockholm Philharmonicone of Swedens leading orchestrasand Sakari Oramo, who has served as its principal conductor since 2008. The centerpiece is Symphony No. 2. Composed between 1909 and 1911, it was premiered in London in 1911 and dedicated to the memory of King Edward VII. This recording marks the 100th anniversary of the premiere. Also included are Sigh, written for strings, harp, and organcomposed around the same timeand Elegy, all of which are beautifully performed with a sense of melancholy.As a Finnish conductor, Oramo specializes in the works of Nordic composers, particularly Sibelius; however, he has been captivated by British musicespecially Elgars orchestrationand has been actively exploring it in recent years.
