After leaving Bitch Magnet, guitarist/vocalist Sooyoung Park formed Seam with bassist Lexi Mitchell and drummer Mac McCaughan (of Superchunk) and released two excellent singles, then Headsparks in 1992. The record is textbook indie rock of the time with plenty of Pixies-style dynamic shifts, the artiness of the Louisville underground, the meeting of noise and pop that was a hallmark of the incipient Merge scene, and even a touch of Neil Youngs storming melancholia. The result is an album thats at once powerful, heartfelt, and subtly anthemic, almost in spite of itself. Certainly that could describe the opening song alone — “Decatur,” kicking things off on an emotional note.
