Cherubini in Stuttgart, 1959Among the conductors of the latter half of the 20th century, Celibidache was undoubtedly one of the greatest and most intensely charismatic figures. He refined his interpretations of works to the very limit and devoted extensive time to rehearsals until he achieved a sound that satisfied him; his performances were of the highest possible caliber while simultaneously possessing the unique intensity characteristic of live performances. Although Celibidache, guided by his own unique philosophy influenced by phenomenology, consistently maintained that his music could not be conveyed through recordings, he did consent to broadcast recordings. Thanks to this, countless music lovers and musicians around the world have been deeply moved by his performances.
