The Pacifica String Quartet’s 8-CD box set of Shostakovich’s String Quartets + Related Works (Volumes 1-4) is a collection of Shostakovich’s famous symphonic works, which are full of irony and pretense. However, the “String Quartets,” which show a completely different side of Shostakovich, are often regarded by many as his greatest masterpieces, as they express his feelings and emotions. The Pacifica String Quartet has attempted to show the “turmoil and confusion” in the Soviet Union at that time by adding one piece by each of the four composers whose works have strong associations with Shostakovich’s. The quartet’s “String Quartet” is a collection of works by Shostakovich and his contemporaries, and is a perfect example of the quartet’s ability to explore the essence of Shostakovich’s music.
