Krzysztof Meyer (b. 1943), one of Polands leading contemporary composers, is also known as a Shostakovich scholar; his book The Life of Shostakovich has been translated into Japanese. It was he who orchestrated Shostakovichs Violin Sonata. The project began in 1995 following a proposal from violinist Dmitry Sitkovetsky, but the challenge lay in how to transpose parts that Shostakovich had written with piano technique and timbre in mind into an orchestral arrangement. However, Meyeran accomplished composer and expert on Shostakovichs musicnot only made cuts and additions but also transformed the pianistic cadenza sections into a purely symphonic concept, crafting a magnificent orchestral work. Although Kremer has also recorded this piece in an arrangement for string orchestra and percussion by Pshkarev, the Meyer version, performed by a full orchestra, is truly reminiscent of a Shostakovich symphon
