This is a collection of exquisite art songs by Meyerbeer (17911864), who is best known as an opera composer. He was born into a wealthy Jewish banking family; his fathers surname was Behr and his mothers was Meyer. It is said that, perhaps in accordance with the Jewish custom of matrilineal descent, he began using the compound surname Meyer-Behra combination of both family nameswhen he inherited his grandfathers estate. His brothers included the astronomer Wilhelm and the playwright Michael; tracks 22 and 25 on this album are songs set to Michaels poems.
