Born in Naples in 1903, Pilati (19031938) was a composer of the same generation as Sersi, Dalla Piccola, Petrassi, and Rieti. He was friends with Respighi, Casella, and Toscanini, and left behind a large body of work before his death at the age of 35. Although he was largely forgotten for some time after his death, he has recently been the subject of a growing reappraisal. His style is consistently gentle and classical, yet it also features moments of brilliance reminiscent of film music. [Comment provided by Naxos Japan]
