Sonny of Sonny & The Sunsets tried his hand at making new music in Senegal in 2024 with a musician friend from Geneva. Through a mutual friend Mbaye Diop, they met Boubacar Tall, a studio owner in San Louis, in the north of the country, and began improvising and making music with local musicians. With a mix of languages (Wolof, Senegalese French, English, and Swiss French), Sonny’s singing, Mbaye Diop’s Wolof songs, and Zambian singer Theresa N’gambi’s backing chorus and singing in her native language, Nyanga, combined to create an American American singer Kelly McFarling’s vocals. The band is also named Sonny And His Cosmoromic Sunsets, and the result is a unique, contemporary sound with a hint of 90’s R&B!
