Sonny Redd, a hard-bopper from Detroit, switched to tenor saxophone in the 1970s and released some rock albums, but it is his alto saxophone playing in the late 50s and 60s that is loved by many jazz fans. Based on Charlie Parker, Red’s style is characterized by the sweetness of Jackie McLean and the funkiness of Cannonball Adderley. His storytelling skills in blues numbers are second to none. This 2-CD set is a coupling of “Breezing,” “A Story Tale,” “The Mode,” and “Images.
