While Carl Nielsen is best known for his six symphonies (currently available as a complete set on Naxos 8.503006), he also composed numerous short orchestral pieces and large-scale incidental music for the theater. It goes without saying that the symphonic poem Pan and the Syrinx is the masterpiece among his short works. With its timbres and textures so ahead of its time that they foreshadow his Fifth Symphony, this work is a truly avant-garde piece. Nielsens most important work for the theater is *Aladdin*, which served as the basis for the *Aladdin Suite*a piece now widely enjoyed as a standalone concert work that showcases his mastery of orchestration. The most famous piece in the suite is The Market at Isfahan. Because four distinct musical themes are layered together, this orchestral piece creates the sensation of sounds coming from all directions within the marketplace
